Transportation and Beverages Drive Up Inflation

At the beginning of 2020 in Panama, a positive variation in the Consumer Price Index was reported, a behavior that was determined partly by the prices of Transportation and Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco.

From the report of the General Comptroller of the Republic:

The groups showing an increase in the National Urban CPI of January 2020, as compared to December 2019 were: Housing, water, electricity and gas with 0.6%; Transportation with 0.5%; Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, Education and Diverse goods and services all with 0.3%; Health and Restaurants and hotels both with 0.1%.

The group Housing, water, electricity and gas showed an increase in three of its eight classes. The class with the greatest variation was "Services for the conservation and repair of housing" with 2.8%, because of the increase in the price of repair services for housing.

The increase observed in the Transportation group was the result of an increase in four of its seven classes. The greatest variations were in the classes "Fuels and lubricants for personal transportation equipment" with 2.0%, due to the increase in the price of fuel for automobiles, and "Other services related to transportation equipment" with 1.9%, because of the increase in the price of car rentals.

Dominican Republic: Inflation Stays Low

After in January and February of this year the year-on-year variation of the CPI was only 0.7% and 1.2%, respectively, in March the inflationary rhythm in the country increased slightly to 1.5%.

0.65% variation with respect to February, placing accumulated inflation at 0.86% at the end of the first quarter of the year, informed the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (BCRD).

Dominican Republic Ends the Year with Slight Inflation

Up to December last year, the year-on-year variation of the Consumer Price Index was just 1.2%, a behavior that is explained by the fall in fuel prices.

The results of the general CPI, by groups of goods and services in December 2018, show reductions in Transport (-1.80%) and Housing (-1.45%), influenced by the reduction in prices of oil derivatives, informed the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic.

Panama: Inflation Close to Zero at End of 2017

Education and health were the sectors that explained the interannual variation of 0.5% registered in December 2017.

The groups that most influenced the year-on-year percentage variation of the National Urban CPI for December 2017 compared to 2016 were: Education with 3.5%, and Health with 2.3%; However, the group Food and non-alcoholic beverages which has the highest weight in the CPI, presented a negative variation of -1.3%.
