Transport Prices Put Downward Pressure on Inflation

At the end of 2019, Panama reported a negative variation in the Consumer Price Index, a behavior that was determined partly by the prices of air passenger transport.

From the report of the General Comptroller of the Republic:

The groups that presented decreases in the National Urban CPI of December, with respect to November 2019 were: Transportation with 0.5%; Furniture, home articles and ordinary home maintenance, and Recreation and culture both with 0.4%; Alcoholic beverages and tobacco with 0.2%; Food and non-alcoholic beverages, and diverse goods and services both with 0.1%.

The Transportation group reflected a drop in three of its seven classes. The greatest variation was in the class "Passenger air transportation" with 17.8%, because of the reduction in the price of air tickets.

The decrease presented in the group Furniture, household items and ordinary home maintenance, was due to the decrease recorded in seven of its eleven classes.

The classes with the greatest variations were "Tools and large equipment" with 1.2%, and "Non-durable household goods" with 1.0%. The decrease reflected in the class "Large tools and equipment" was due to the reduction in the price of household tools, and "Non-durable household goods" because of the decrease in the price of cleaning and conservation products.

The Recreation and Culture group showed a drop in seven of its sixteen classes. The greatest variation was in the class "Games, toys and hobbies" with 2.1%, because of the decrease in the price of dolls.

At the beginning of 2020 in Panama, a positive variation in the Consumer Price Index was reported, a behavior that was determined partly by the prices of Transportation and Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco.

The groups showing an increase in the National Urban CPI of January 2020, as compared to December 2019 were: Housing, water, electricity and gas with 0.6%; Transportation with 0.5%; Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, Education and Diverse goods and services all with 0.3%; Health and Restaurants and hotels both with 0.1%.

In May, the CPI registered a negative monthly variation of 0.11%, mainly explained by the prices of the Transport sector, and Food and non-alcoholic beverages.

Education and health were the sectors that explained the interannual variation of 0.5% registered in December 2017.

The groups that most influenced the year-on-year percentage variation of the National Urban CPI for December 2017 compared to 2016 were: Education with 3.5%, and Health with 2.3%; However, the group Food and non-alcoholic beverages which has the highest weight in the CPI, presented a negative variation of -1.3%.

The consumer price index showed a variation of 0.57% compared to December 2016 and an interannual variation of 0.66%.
