Trade and Services Boost Guatemalan Economy

In Guatemala, the economic activity reported a 2.8% year-on-year growth rate in the fourth month of the year, mainly because of the behavior of the Wholesale and Retail Commerce and Private Services sector.

After the 2.7% increase in economic activity reported by the Banco de Guatemala in March, in the third month of the year, represented an acceleration since in February 2019 the variation was only 1.9%, the 2.8% in April is a continuation of the positive path of the economy.

The Central Bank report explains that "... The economic activity measured by the IMAE estimate, in April 2019, showed a 2.8% growth rate (3.5% in April 2018).

Such behavior was influenced by the positive result experienced, mainly, by the following economic activities: Manufacturing industries; Wholesale and retail trade; Private services; and Financial intermediation, insurance and auxiliary activities.

The tendency-cycle series registered a 3.1% year-on-year growth rate, similar to the observed in the same month of the previous year.

The 2.7% increase in economic activity reported by the Banco de Guatemala in the third month of the year, represents an acceleration since in February 2019 the variation was only 1.9%.

Manufacturing and transportation were the sectors that accounted for most of the variation in the economic activity index during the fourth month of the year.

The economic activity measured by the IMAE estimate, in April 2018, showed a growth rate of 2.3% (1.7% in April 2017).

Transport, private services and trade were the sectors that accounted for most of the variation in the economic activity index during the beginning of the year.
