Trade Facilitation Committee Reactivated

After two years of non-operation, El Salvador's government and business associations agreed to reactivate the institution dedicated to decision-making on customs matters and trade agreements.

Tuesday, July 30, 2019

The private sector was represented by the Presidents and Executive Directors of the guilds ASI, COEXPORT, CAMARASAL, CAMAGRO, AMCHAM, CAMTEX and ADES, which are part of the Inter-union Commission for Trade Facilitation (CIFACIL) and participate with voice and vote within the Committee, informed the Salvadoran government.

The representative of the industrial sector and President of CIFACIL, Eduardo Cáder, recognized that it is an instance of propositive debate at the highest level and with the best technical specialists of both parts, to eliminate the barriers to the international trade.

"On the other hand, Cáder, said that the private sector expects to achieve prompt solutions to the problems faced every day by businessmen, as a result of cumbersome procedures and processes, duplication of permits, among others. Therefore, the objective should be to facilitate export and import operations and generate a better business climate to promote more domestic and foreign investment," according to a statement from the Ministry of Economy."

The document adds that "... The Executive President of CIFACIL, Carmen Aída de Meardi, exposed to the members of the Committee the priority issues for each of the Ministries and Autonomous Institutions and that represent the greatest obstacles to export and import, as well as solution proposals that represent a vital input for the work of this Committee. These proposals include a new General Customs Law that will be presented to the Government in August; the joint elaboration of a Strategic Plan for 2019-2024 Trade Facilitation; as well as the consolidation in the short term of El Salvador's incorporation into the Customs Union of the Northern Triangle."
