Tourist arrivals still declining

In accordance with what was reported during 2018, in the first seven months of the year Panama received 1.48 million tourists, 2% of those reported in the same period of 2017.

According to the latest figures from the General Comptroller, between January and July 2017 and the same period of this year, the number of visitors with tourist purposes who arrived in the country fell from one million 504 thousand to one million 475 thousand.

Regarding the decline registered, reports that "... Businessmen in the sector insist that the figures will continue to fall if the promotion of the country abroad is not increased, and if agreements are not reached with low-cost airlines as have done countries in the region, including Colombia and Costa Rica, where the entry of tourists this year exceeds 5% of the data for 2017."

"The sector expects the National Assembly to approve changes to the law that created the Tourism Promotion Fund this month, to allow the international promotion of the country through this public-private mechanism. In July, the $20 million contract that was executed in January 2017 expired."

Tourist Arrivals Grew 4% up to June 2019

During the first half of the year, 1.73 million visitors arrived in Costa Rica, a figure 3.9% higher than that reported in the same period in 2018, behavior that is explained by the rise in the arrival of tourists from North America.

In the first eight months of the year, Panama received 1.65 million tourists, 2% less than those reported in the same period in 2017.

According to the country's official figures, between the first eight months of 2017 and the period from January to August of this year, tourist arrivals fell from 1.69 million to 1.65 million. This negative behavior strengthens the trend that has shown throughout the year.

Panama: Tourist Spending Continues to Slow Down

From January to October 2017, tourist spending grew by only 1.6% compared to the same period in 2016, significantly lower than the 13% recorded between 2015 and 2016.

According to figures from the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic, during the first ten months of the year tourists who arrived in the country spent $3.798 billion, an amount that exceeds by $60 million the $3.738 billion registered in the same period in 2016.
