Tourism Growing in Nicaragua

Projections are that 2016 will close with a growth of 6% compared to 2015 in terms of the number of tourists visiting the country.

an dir="ltr">In 2015 the country received 1.4 million tourists, and for 2016, the National Chamber of Tourism forecasts growth of 6%, and an increase in the income generated by the activity, which in 2015 totaled $528 million.

Lucy Valenti, president of the union, told that "... the year could end with a 20% increase in revenue, which could reach about $633.6 million."

"... 'This year we expected to grow by ten percent, but according to reports from the Central Bank and Intur, up until September we have grown 20 percent compared to the previous year (in income)'. Valenti acknowledged the need ... to create a strategy to raise the average amount of spending by travelers. 'This is an effort we have to make between the private sector and government, producing at least a billion from tourism in the coming years."

Optimism for Tourism in 2019

During 2018, tourist arrivals to Guatemala reached 2.4 million and the year-on-year increase was 14%. By 2019, the number of visitors is expected to rise to 2.6 million, representing a 10% increase.

According to figures from the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (INGUAT), it is estimated that between 2018 and 2019, foreign exchange income in the sector will register a 2% increase, going from $1.231 million to $1.249 million.

The union of tourism entrepreneurs estimates that the country will receive 1.9 million tourists, and they expect the activity to generate close to $830 million.

Combining efforts on promotion and marketing in order to attract more tourists from South American countries is one of the goals proposed by the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur). Figures from the trade union indicate that the average daily expenditure of South American tourists exceeds the general average.

Nicaragua: Tourism Revenues up 22%

In 2016 tourism activities were worth $642 million, which is an increase of 22% compared to 2015.

Growth in revenues in the tourism sector was 21.6% compared to 2015, explained mainly by improved results in all indicators for the sector.

In the first six months of the year, a 22.3% increase in tourists’ daily spending was reported, as compared to the same period in 2010.

According to the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism, visitors who spend most are those entering by air, with a daily average of $82.5.

Tourists entering by land record an average daily expenditure of $26.4.
