Torrijos seeks investment in Emirates

Martín Torrijos, the president of Panama, made a brief visit to the United Arab Emirates in an effort to boost trade and economic cooperation.

After visiting Qatar, Torrijos flew into Abu Dhabi, where he met with the heir to the throne, Sheikh Mohamad bin Zayed al Nahiyan. The two men were reported to have discussed bilateral cooperation in culture, tourism and trade.

Honduran Trade Mission In Taiwan

The Honduran has been in Taipei since Monday and will stay until 20 August.

According to a press release from Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit aims to build closer ties and enable mutual cooperation.

"During its stay on the island, the Honduran team will see success of the Taiwanese 'product for every village' program, which seeks to encourage local craft industries, and the digital education project, supported by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC," reports La Tribuna.

FDI down in Central America and Caribbean

The manufacturing sector as a whole saw a decline in FDI due to a sharp drop in flows to Central America and the Caribbean.

In Central America and the Caribbean (other than financial centres), the decline in FDI inflows was largely due to a 20% fall in flows to Mexico, which mainly resulted from a halving of inflows to the manufacturing sector (CNIE, 2009).

Panama hopes to build refinery

September 2008

Panama is hoping to seal the deal with Qatar and Occidental Petroleum (Oxy) before the end of 2008 to build a refiner.

Qatar and Occidental Petroleum have until 31 December 2008 to present the final version of the project and to make a decision, according to the stipulations of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in May 2007 between the governments of Panama and Qatar, said the Minister of Trade, Carmen Gisela Vergara.
