Tires: Regional Purchases Up 3%

From January to March 2019, companies in Central American countries imported $108 million worth of new tires, a figure 3% higher than that reported in the same period in 2018.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In the first quarter of the year, the main importer of new pneumatic tires in Central America was Guatemala, with $30 million, followed by Panama, with $23 million, Costa Rica, with $17 million, Honduras, with $15 million, Nicaragua, with $12 million, and El Salvador, with $11 million.

Regional Business: Slight Contraction
Between the first quarter of 2018 and the same period of 2019, the value imported into Central America had a positive variation, rising from $105 million to $108 million.

For the periods concerned, imports from China also increased, in this case in %, rising from $52.9 million to $53.9 million.

Main Suppliers
From January to March 2019, 50% of the value imported into the region came from China, 5% from Japan, 5% from the USA, 4% from Brazil and 4% from Thailand.

China is the market source of imports that has grown the most for the months concerned in the last eight years, since in 2012 accounted for 30% of total imports in the region and in 2019 that proportion rose to 50%.
