Threats to Investment in Electricity in Guatemala

Continuous attacks on the infrastructure of the country's power sector are jeopardizing investments.

The industry has had to deal with attacks on power transmission towers and continuing obstacles to the construction of power generation projects.

Joel Maldonado writes in Siglo21.com.gt , "The union is concerned about these facts, as the country goes through a decisive moment in the development of the sector, now that more investment is wanted in the form of 800 megawatts tenders, says Horacio Fernandez, CEO of the National Generators Association, stressing that he is concerned "that the criminals remain free and that the infrastructure is threatened '."

International Energy Tender Attracts 24 Companies

A tender for the provision of 800 MW of electricity for the next 15 years has attracted companies producing energy using wind power, hydro power, biomass, bunker fuel, coal and natural gas.

Among the companies interested in the bidding which will take place in January 2012 are, Cutuco Energy, Italy's Enel, los ingenios Pantaleón, La Unión and Magdalena, among others, said Carlos Colom Bickford, president of the National Energy Commission (CNEE).

Actis to Invest in Clean Energy in Guatemala

The investment fund that acquired the operation of Natural Gas in Guatemala has announced other investments in renewable energy generation.

For $345 million, Actis, a British investment fund, acquired 90% of the shares of the Eastern and Western Distributors of Energy (Deorsa and Deocsa) from Gas Natural Fenosa.

Guatemala: Spanish company, Unión Fenosa, Receives Energy Offers

Eight power generation companies have submitted technical and financial offers to supply 240MW.

The participating companies include hydroelectric power generators Hidroxacbal and Renace as wells as Generadora del Norte, Puerto Quetzal Power (PQP), Generadora del Este (in conjunction with Electrogeneración), the La Laguna power plant, Duke Energy International and the Magdalena cogeneration project.

Guatemala Invites Bids for Supplying 400MW of Energy

The energy authority will put out to tender the purchase of over 400 megawatts for the country’s three distribution companies.

Carlos Colom Bickford, president of CNEE, the National Electric Energy Commission, reported they expect to invite bids in the first half of 2010, and award the contract by yearend.
