The Business of Self Produced Solar Energy

In Guatemala there is a total of 650 users registered as self-producers of energy made with their own solar panels who upload their surplus to the electricity network.

Thursday, December 11, 2014

Ricardo Mendez, commercial manager at Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala, SA (EEGSA) told Prensalibre.com that "... 'If the energy input is higher than consumption, the balance is saved to be applied on the next bill.'"

"... This format and method for self supplying energy is booming ... EEGSA had registered u to September 2013 only 150 self-producers and up to November this year the figure is 650, with most of them being located in the department of Guatemala."

"... With the Technical Standard for Renewable Distributed Generation and Selfproducing Users with Surplus Energy, the charge for distribution (Value Added Distribution -VAD-) is made only on the kilowatts that resulted from subtracting the total consumption of energy minus the energy which is self produced ... with the new rule, which took effect in September, this charge is for the total amount of kilowatts used during the month. The balance of energy saved when users upload to the system than they consume, has not expiry date. "

Solar Energy is Low-Cost, But Government Increases Prices

August 2019

The non-tax exemption of equipment that generates solar energy, together with the gaps in its regulation, are some of the factors that make investments more expensive in Nicaragua.

Currently the scenario in Nicaragua is favorable for investments to be made in solar energy generation equipment, given that so far this year have been reported increases in electricity tariffs.

Guatemala: Solar Panel Use Is Increasing

April 2017

The installation of solar energy systems in homes has been growing in recent years, with the number of self producers registered with Eegsa going from 700 in 2014 to more than 1,500 up to April this year.

Figures from Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala indicate that the majority of those registered as self producers are in the department of Guatemala, according to an explanation given to Prensalibre.com by Ricardo Méndez, commercial manager of the distributor.

Little Results from Self-Production of Energy

September 2016

Two weeks from the closing date, only 11 applications have been received to install self-production energy systems in homes.

Some attribute the lack of interest to the cost of installing the panels, as the return on investment is in the medium term.

Connection to Electricity Grid by Small Generators

March 2015

In Costa Rica an announcement has been made of an expedited registration for self-generation of electricity and more complex procedures for the award of contracts to upload surplus energy to the distribution networks.

After the state power company ended a few days ago the pilot project for solar distributed generation , the Regulatory Authority for Public Services (Aresep) announced that the rules for connecting to the network and sale of surplus will be ready in the coming days. They are currently working on the details of the rates to be applied to "... The initial connection, the monthly access fee and selling the surplus (the price at which each kilowatt hour will be sold). "
