The Spanish Tourist Market

Spanish tourists are the most numerous European tourists visiting Costa Rica, where they stay for an average of 10 days.

A statement from the National Chamber of Tourism reads:

Businesses in the tourism sector consider it vital to maintain a presence in the Spanish market.

• Tortuguero, Arenal and Monteverde are the regions that receive the most visitors from Spain.
• According to business people, Spanish travelers stay around 10 nights in the country.

January 2012. Staying competitive by attracting tourism from Spain, even though this country is going through a difficult time economically, is the main reason that Costa Rican tourism businesses will be participating in the Thirty-second edition of the International Tourism Fair, Fitur, which will take place from 18th to 22nd January in Madrid.

According to the fair’s official website http://www.ifema.es/ferias/fitur/default.html, 57 Costa Rican companies are registered, from the areas of accommodation, tour operators, travel agencies, car rental firms, marketing companies, media, and also prsent will be the National Chamber of Tourism, the Costa Rican Institute of Tourism and other chambers and associations from the industry.

"It is a meeting place for establishing and consolidating business, where every company, in addition to work towards its goals, also becomes a general promotion for Costa Rica as a tourist destination. It is one of the most important tourism fairs in the world, so it is definitely very competitive," said Juan Carlos Ramos, President of CANATUR.

Out of all Europeans, the Spanish are among the most frequent travelers, and therefore, the authorities are intensifying efforts in the Iberian market.


The Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP) is stepping up its efforts to promote the country as an attractive tourist destination and persuade more Spanish people to travel there instead of going to Guatemala, Costa Rica and Cuba, Spain’s favorite destinations in Latin America.
