About 35 Guatemalan companies have made inroads into international markets with programs used by banks, corporations or applications sold via the Apple Store, reported ElPeriodico.com.gt.

"These companies are constantly creating and developing applications for operating systems like the Google Android, iPhone and Apple Inc's iPhone, but there are many independent programmers", said Guisela Flores, coordinator of the DigitalGT commission of the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport) to ElPeriodico.

Developers of mobile applications, "have discovered a business opportunity to develop applications such as educational games for the so called ‘smartphones’."

An example of one such application developed by Guatemalans is ‘Wake'n 'Shake’, sold via the Apple store for $0.99 and which in less than a year has had over 75,000 downloads. "While Apple keeps 30 percent of the proceeds from the downloads, the application Wake'n'Shake has generated its creators revenues of more than $50 billion."

According to Digital GT, exports and digital content applications totaled $25 million in 2011, 6.3 percent more than in 2010 when they were U.S. $23.4 million.
