The Rise of the Nicaraguan Stock Market

In 2017, $2.494 billion was traded on the stock market, 34% more than the sum total of operations last year.

The Central Bank of Nicaragua reported that last year they observed in the stock market " ... the predominance of the national currency, representing almost 88% of total trades in different markets."

Regarding issuers, the report explains that " ... more than 97% of the volume of trades were made with public sector issues, and in reference to terms, most instruments and operations were short-term."

The document adds that in relation to the markets " ... the primary one had the greatest volumes transacted and the most dynamism, with a share of 69 percent of the market, and has practically tripled its level of trades in the last two years, highlighting the volume of placement of BCN letters, which accounted for 90 percent of what was traded in this market."

Nicaragua: Stock Market Figures

February 2019

During the last three months of last year, $3.324 million was traded on the stock market, far surpassing the $558 million recorded in the same period in 2017.

During the fourth quarter, the most dynamic market was the primary, where 83.9% of the total volume was traded, and the amount traded in the fourth quarter of 2018 represented a little more than 6 times the value traded during the same period in 2017, reports the Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN).

In 2018, the volume traded in the Panamanian Stock Exchange totaled $6.100 million, 15% more than the data reported in 2017, mainly because of the behavior of the primary market.

The increase in the volume traded in 2018 represents a recovery in the stock market, since in 2017 the stock market activity of the Panama Stock Exchange (BVP) reported a 28% decrease compared to 2016.

Investments in Stock Market Up 11%

In Panama, the portfolio managed by brokerage firms totaled $35,577 million at the end of the first half of the year, 11% more than was registered in the same period in 2017.

According to the Superintendency of the Securities Market, of the total portfolio, 43% correspond to bonds, another 27% of the assets belong to common shares, and 21% is made up of other securities. 

Nicaragua: Stock Exchange Transactions Up 30% in 2016

January 2017

Trading volume last year reached $1.526 billion, 30% more than what was traded in 2015.

The repo market accounted for most of the volume traded in the stock market in 2016, with an increase over 2015 of 33%. The volume traded in these instruments was 382 million, while in 2015  $289 million was traded.
