The Potential of the Free Zone in Tocumen

Ten companies have already shown interest in setting up in the logistics center to be developed in Tocumen, whose business plan and regulations for a free zone could be ready in September.

Among the activities that will be developed by the companies operating in the logistics park are packing and repacking, as well as product manufacturing and other complementary activities. The regulation of the free zone, to be set up in an area measuring 200 hectares, is scheduled for September this year.

Vice President of Planning and Strategy at Tocumen International Airport, Carmen Carrizo de Pages said that , "... 'The impact in Panama of the Free Zone in Tocumen will be more important than the revenue that the State provides the terminal, because it is expected to generate 9,000 direct jobs when all of the companies are set up'."

The Free Zone at Tocumen International Airport would be ideal for e-commerce companies or online businesses such as Amazon and eBay."... 'Amazon is a US company with e-commerce and cloud computing services, while eBay is an auction site for products bought over the Internet. "It would be very good for companies such as Amazon and eBay who have their warehouses or distribution centers in Tocumen, which has 90 destinations'."

Panama: Investment in Free Trade Zone Announced

The government informed that in San Miguelilto it is projected to invest $39 million in the implementation of a digital free trade zone, which is expected to install computer technology companies and centers of higher and technical studies.

Authorities of the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (Mici) said that in a first stage, the private company will invest $10.6 million and then another $28.3 million will be disbursed.

The Potential of a Logistics Area in Tocumen

Ten companies have already expressed interest in the free zone that Tocumen is set to develop in the airport's cargo terminal, whose tender is scheduled for the end of November this year.

The logistics zone will cover a total area of 35 hectares, but the first stage, which will begin in the first quarter of 2018 with earthworks, will include the development of 18 hectares.

Logistics Center in Tocumen to be Tendered in April 2017

The first stage of the project to develop a logistics center and free zone on 200 hectares in a section of Panama City airport will be tendered in six months.

The head of Tocumen S.A. told that "... the beginning of the bidding process is expected within six months, and the first stage will start with an investment of $15 million. 'The board of directors has already authorized us to start with the development of the urbinization to adapt 60 hectares for the concession and build the logistics craft'."

Tocumen Could Become Free Zone

The 50 companies already operating at Tocumen's airport facilities will be able to access free trade zone incentives if the request made by the administration of the terminal is approved.

The documentation was submitted to the National Commission of Free Zones at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MITI), and there will be a 30 day period to review and approve the application.
