The Costa Rican plastics manufacturing industry constitutes some 300 companies who traded more than 215 products abroad in 2011, whereas in 2007 there were only 248 companies selling around 212 products abroad.

Sales last year reached $314 million, the best year the industry has had in the last five years, according to data from the investment agency Procomer. This is 30.6% more than in 2010 and an increase of 57% compared to 2007.

"Items of plastic packaging, plastic sheets and plates, pipes and pipe fittings and plates for switches and outlets are the most popular products sold abroad," reports Elfinancierocr.com.

"Regarding the biggest companies, Panduit de Costa Rica, Durman Esquivel (subsidiary of Aliaxis Latin America), Proquinal, Yamber and CSI Closure Systems and Manufacturing, occupy the top five in terms of quantity of exports."

Guatemala: Plastic Exports Up 58%

In the first quarter of the year 15 million kilos of plastic were sold abroad in 35 countries, 58% more than in the same period in 2015.

From a statement issued by Agexport:

Exports during the first quarter of 2016 amounted to 15,190,000 kilos (US $8.4 million) which resulted in a growth of 57.91% compared to the same period in 2015.

Growth in Plastics El Salvador

The plastics industry of El Salvador increased its foreign sales by 60% between 2009 and 2012. According to data of the Central Reserve Bank of El Salvador, in 2012 alone, over $81 million worth was sold to Guatemala.

Foreign sales of manufactured products during the first four months of this year grew by 22 percent compared with the same period last year.

Max Staebler, president of the Manufacturing Commission, said that in the first four months of 2008 the main products exported were plastics, shoes, refrigerators, and handicrafts.
