A statement from the Costa Rican Oil Refinery (RECOPE) reads:
On May 15 the order was given for the proposed expansion of the Atlantic port terminal, awarded to the consortium ICA-MECO (ICA Ingenieros Civiles Asociados de C.V-Constructora Meco S.A).
The awarded company will be responsible for the review and adjustment of the basic and detailed engineering provided by the Costa Rican Oil Refinery (RECOPE SA), the supply of materials and equipment, construction, commissioning and transfer of technology for the operation of the new dock.
According to the schedule the work is expected to be completed during the months of June / July 2014. In total, construction will last for 26 months and will cost $96 million. The project involves the construction of a pier with mooring dolphins, which can safely download products that the country needs, such as oil, gasoline, diesel and A-1 jet fuel. The port work is an extension of the current oil dock, so it will be necessary to dredge at least 1.9 million cubic meters of material, extending the northern breakwater by 200 meters and building four piers with mooring dolphins (two in the sea two on land) and a loading dock.
In addition, the project involves the construction of all the systems needed to provide security and operational efficiency, such as navigational aids, pipelines for oil transfer, fire fighting, automation and control, among other things. Some direct benefits that the development of new oil terminal will bring are the incorporation of new technologies making port operations more efficient as they will be able to operate 24 hours a day and also the capacity of vessels for the new facilities will be expanded enabling the ability to receive ships of 80,000 deadweight tons (560,000 barrels).
