The Dominican Republic: $150 million for Forestry Projects

The Senate has approved a loan agreement signed between the country and the Inter-American Development Bank, and the funds will be used for the Sustainable Agroforestry Development program.

The Senate of the Dominican Republic has reported that the resources will be used to finance the Sustainable Agroforestry Development program which will be executed by the Executing Technical Unit of Projects at the Agroforestry Development of the Presidency of the Republic (UTPDA) and the Ministry of Public Works and Communications. This initiative was sent by the Executive Power.

The Agroforestry Development Program is an initiative that seeks to reduce poverty, improve environmental conditions in the intervened zones, restore public lands and reform the technical capacity of farmers to adopt agroforestry technological packages in the provinces in which this program will be executed such as Elías Piña, San Juan, Azua, Independencia, Bahoruco and Barahona.

Senator Rafael Calderón spent one shift in the session, and explained that these resources are intended to reforest more than 700,000 tareas of land, and they will be planting lemon trees, avocados, coffee, and cocoa among other things, explains a statement from the Senate.

$12.5 million has been earmarked for rural and environmental development plans.

Following in the footsteps of initiatives implemented in Costa Rica, where resources have been allocated for reforestation and other environmental programs, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture, will invest $12.5 million in similar programs in El Salvador.

Funding for Forestry Companies in Guatemala

A joint venture between IDB and financing company “Financiera de Occidente S.A.” will support the domestic rural forestry industry.

Luis Alejandro Mejía is the head of Eco-Business at Occidente Financial Group. He was quoted by as saying that “this program is valuable because the resources donated by IDB will be used to create financial products with preferential rates”.
