The Cosmetic Industry in the Dominican Republic

Eye makeup and hair products led exports of cosmetic products in the first ten months of 2017, which amounted to about $33 million.

Eye makeup, hair products, creams, lotions, powders, lipsticks and manicure and pedicure products are the main products that Dominican companies manufacture and export, mainly to the US market.

The executive vice-president of the Association of Industries (AIRD), Circe Almánzar, "...  thinks that Dominican beauty products are perceived as a "country brand", especially in communities abroad, where the quality of these local items are appreciated. Almanzar explained that the Beauty Products Cluster was created taking into account the potential of this industrial subsector and the large number of chemical, beauty and hair companies that exist in the country. It is equally due to the innovation of these products, their relation with the ethnic market and the Dominican agroindustry."

Eldinero.com.do reports that "...According to data from AIRD, in 2016 exports totalled US $22 million. The most popular products included essential oils (US $1.4 million); bath gel, deodorant and air freshener (US $1.4 million); lipstick, nail varnish, creams, talcs, oils, gels and lotions (US $2.7), and conditioners, treatments, leave-in products, dyes, fixatives and gels (US $14.9 million)."

Nicaragua: Personal Care Business Growing

March 2017

In 2016 imports of makeup and skin care products grew by 7% compared to 2015, while imports of shampoo and hair preparations grew by 10% in the same period.

Hand in hand with the growth in Nicaraguan's purchasing power comes an increase in demand for luxury products and services such as haircuts and other specialized treatments in beauty salons or purchase of skin care products.
