The Cement Business in the Dominican Republic

Seven companies are competing in a market which in the first semester of this year reported sales worth around $223 million.

Friday, November 17, 2017

Figures from the Dominican Association of Portland Cement Producers (Adocem) show that compared to the same semester in 2016 there was an increase of just 1.4% in sales reported by Cibao, Argos Dominicana, Cemex, Domicem, Andino, Santo Domingo and Panam.

Eldinero.com.do reports that "... In six of the seven cement companies there is Dominican capital, with Cibao, Panam and Andino being of totally Creole origin. At the end of 2016, the seven companies had an installed production capacity of 7.7 million metric tons."

"...However, despite registering increases, 2017 does not seem to be such a positive year for the local cement industry, in particular because of an internal decline suffered by the construction sector in the first half of the year and a reduction in exports. From January to June 2017, construction fell by -2.7%, compared to the same period in 2016, when the contribution of the sector to gross domestic product (GDP) was 16.8%."

Rayza Rodríguez, president of the Adocem, said that "...'The results to date are still dropping, so we do not expect to have growth of the same size as in previous years'."
