The Agricultural Products Exported by Central America

In 2016, bananas were the agricultural product that generated the most export revenue in Central America, with sales of $2.4 billion, corresponding to 5.7 million tons.

Variation of regional export 
Between 2015 and 2016, the agricultural products that increased their export value were bananas and pineapples, which registered increases of 8% and 9% respectively.

In contrast to the performance of bananas and pineapples, the value of coffee and sugar sales fell by 6% and 21% respectively. 

Main exporting countries by product 
In 2016, the main exporter of bananas and pineapples in Central America was Costa Rica, registering sales of $997 million for bananas and $905 million for pineapples.

In the case of coffee, in 2016, Honduras was the top seller when adding up exports, which totalled $884 million, and on the subject of sugar Guatemala was the largest exporter, selling $814 million worth of this product abroad.

Price of regional exports by product 
From January 2012 to December 2016 the average prices of a kilo of pineapple exported ranged between $0.39 and $0.46.  Bananas also remained relatively stable at between $0.37 and $0.44. 

However, for the period in question, the average price per kilo of exported sugar fell by 25%, going from $0.60 in January 2012 to $0.45 by December 2016. The average price of a kilo of export coffee also decreased, going from $4.93 to $3.29.

Coffee is still the main agricultural product sold abroad, with annual exports of around $3,035 million, followed by bananas, with $2,574 million and sugar, with $1,241 million.
