The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has accelerated its plans for the construction of an additional landfill, for $170 million, with the goal of regulating increases in the level of the water basin and preventing flooding.

An excessive increase of the water level in Lake Gatun caused by extreme storms could cause damage to the canal’s infrastructure, which would leave the country with economic losses due to closure of the waterway, as well as negatively affecting its various business users.

The company Montgomery Watson Harza will undertake the design work after it won a contract last year in the order of $4.44 million. The design includes all assessments and specialized studies, additional geological exploration and physical models, reports Panamaamerica.com.pa.

The design development will take a period of 20 months. It is estimated that by 2013 the tender for the construction should be ready and work completed in approximately 2016, according to the ACP.
