Televisions: Shopping in Mexico loses strength

In recent years, televisions manufactured in Mexico have lost importance according to the amount purchased, since in the first half of 2016 they represented 54% of total regional imports and for the same period in 2020 the proportion fell to 39%.

Guatemala and Costa Rica, Main Importers
As of June 2020, the main importer in Central America was Guatemala, with $38 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $33 million, Honduras, with $21 million, El Salvador, with $16 million, Panama, with $13 million and Nicaragua, with $6 million.

From January to June of this year, Nicaragua was the only market in the region that increased its imports, registering a 13% year-on-year increase.

Costa Rica reduced its purchases by 6%, Guatemala by 24%, Honduras by 43%, El Salvador by 44% and Panama by 46%.

Business Decreases in Central America
Between the first half of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported into the region decreased 28%, from $176 million to $126 million.

For the periods in question, purchases from Mexico decreased by 39%, from $82 million to $49 million.

Mexican Companies, the Most Important Suppliers
In the first six months of 2020, 39% of the value imported into the region came from Mexico, 32% from China, 20% from the US, 1% from Vietnam and 1% from Hong Kong.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 11% of the total value purchased, and in 2020 it rose to 32%.
