Telephony Companies Threaten to Leave El Salvador

Telecomm companies warned that they will abandon the country if the basic fee for fixed line telephony is eliminated.

The bill, passed by the legislative assembly, must still be ratified by President Mauricio Funes.

Representatives from telecommunications companies Claro, Tigo and Movistar stated their position in an official press release.

The release states: " ... this action (eliminating the basic fee for fixed telephony), is a negative precedent for the country's investment climate, as it goes against El Salvador's economic and legal stability...".
