Tariff elimination between Costa Rica and Panama

Starting January 1, the tariff benefits agreed to in the FTA that came into effect in November will be applied to products from both countries.

Reports from nacion.com say "that according to the Minister of Foreign Trade in Costa Rica, Marco Vinicio Ruiz, this was agreed to in the internal rules of the trade agreement.

Cereals, snack, chewing gum, pasta, jellies and jams will go from paying a 15% duty to being tariff free. Other articles, such as leather and jewelry will go from a tariff of between 10 and 15% to zero."

Costa Rica sees big opportunities in FTA with Panama

The elimination or reduction of tariffs for exports to the Panama market under the FTA will be a big help to ease the crisis in 2009.

Practically all sectors have opportunities in the market, representatives of the various chambers all agreed in separate declarations.

The Treaty with Panama came into effect on November 23, but only partially, because the part concerning the removal of tariffs and rules of origin will come into effect starting January 1.

Costa Rica legislators should approve the agreement this week at the latest after the second debate on the commercial agreement with Panama.

Congress received the ruling from the Constitutional Court which declares that the treaty does not contain any illegalities.
The agreement has the support of all the parties in the Congress, hence its approval should be quick.

Costa Rica endorses FTA with Panama

The Constitutional Court endorsed the FTA with Panama after finding no conflicts with the Constitution; the project will be voted on in Congress in the next few days.

The ruling issued by the Court indicates that "there are no essential vices in the proceeding of said project" nor in the details of the agreement.

Free Trade Agreement between Panama and Costa Rica comes into effect in October

Eleven months after it was signed, Costa Rica legislators will push the government to put the send the agreement to the Congress for debate during the month of August so that it can coming into force by the end of October.

All the political parties, even opposition parties such as the People’s Action Party (PAC), are in favor of the agreement; therefore the debates may take place in August or early September.
