TVs: Regional Purchases Do Not Rebound

During the first half of 2019, TV imports of companies in the region amounted $176 million, 27% less than reported in the same period in 2018.

Guatemala and Costa Rica, Main Importers
As of June 2019, the main importer in Central America was Guatemala, with $50 million, followed by Costa Rica with $35 million, Honduras with $34 million, El Salvador with $28 million, Panama with $24 million and Nicaragua with $5 million.

Business Increases in Central America
Between the first semester of 2018 and the same period in 2019, value imported into the region decreased 27% from $240 million to $176 million. For the periods in question, purchases from Mexico decreased 31%, from $119 million to $82 million.

Mexican Companies, the Most Important Suppliers
From January to June 2019, 46% of the value imported into the region came from Mexico, 28% from China, 12% from the USA and 2% from Spain.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question over the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 11% of the total value purchased, and in 2019 it rose to 28%.

During the first half of 2018, imports of televisions in the region totaled $240 million, and purchases from Mexican companies increased 58% over the same period in 2017.

More Chinese TVs in Central America

June 2018

In 2017, television imports from China totaled $120 million, equivalent to an increase of 8% compared to figures from 2016.
