Guatemala and Costa Rica, Main Importers
As of March 2020, the main importer in Central America was Guatemala, with $24 million, followed by Costa Rica with $17 million, Honduras with $12 million, El Salvador with $10 million, Panama with $8 million and Nicaragua with $4 million.

Business Decreases in Central America
Between the first quarter of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported into the region decreased by 9%, from $81 million to $74 million. For the periods in question, purchases from Mexico decreased 15%, from $36 million to $30 million.

From January to March of this year, Nicaragua and Guatemala were the markets in the region that increased their imports, with year-on-year increases of 49% and 2%, respectively.

Costa Rica, El Salvador, Panama and Honduras reduced their purchases by 1%, 23%, 24% and 25%, in that order.

Mexican Companies, Most Important Suppliers
In the first three months of 2020, 41% of the value imported into the region came from Mexico, 30% from China, 20% from the US and 1% from Hong Kong.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question over the last nine years, since in 2012 it represented 13% of the total value purchased, and in 2020 it rose to 30%.
