Supermarkets: New Investment in El Salvador

Walmart opened a new sales point under the Maxi Despensa format, in La Libertad, and required a $4 million investment.

Walmart representatives informed that the new Maxi Despensa Campos Verdes is located in a total area of 1,833 square meters, of which 1,436 square meters correspond to the sales room.

Claudia de Ibáñez, manager of Corporate Affairs for Walmart de México y Centroamérica, explained to that "... The multinational, which arrived in El Salvador in 2005, reaches 100 stores in a bid to expand in the country, where several locations are being studied constantly."

Regarding new investments in the country, Ibáñez added that "... We have some stores on the way that still don't get their permits (...) With the others that are on the way, maybe this year they will start with their construction. We do not rule out any area for the opening of new stores, we want to reach all the places where we are not."

With this new investment, the chain of U.S. origin reaches 100 establishments in the country, and regionally total 813 stores, which are distributed from Guatemala to Costa Rica.

Supermarket Chain to Prepare Investments

Walmart plans to invest $48 million in Guatemala during 2019, of which $25 million will be used to open new stores and remodel existing ones.

According to information provided by representatives of Walmart, the investment projected for this year in the country will double that invested in 2018, since last year the amount disbursed totaled $24 million.

Walmart El Salvador is investing $24 million in the construction of two new stores, which will be located in Antiguo Cuscatlán and Ahuachapán.

The supermarket chain reported that this year they are making investments in the construction of two new stores in the departments of La Libertad and Ahuchapán, and also carry out remodeling work in another existing sales point in the municipality of Santa Tecla.
