Supermarket Chain Expands in Costa Rica

Auto Mercado will open two new stores in 2010, reaching a total 14 locations in the country.

The new supermarkets will be located in the city of Alajuela and in the municipality of La Unión.

“As with their other supermarkets, the new ones will feature commercial space for other businesses, via ten 65m2 stores, which are normally rented by banks, video clubs or laundry services”, reported elfinancierocr.com.

Ongoing and projected investments indicate that there is still room for small and medium enterprises.

Small and medium sized supermarket chains are expanding in the greater metropolitan area.

One example is Super Mora, a mini chain of supermarkets from Puriscal which in 2014 will be expanding into Santa Ana, where there are plans to invest $3.7 million in the construction of a 7000 m² square which will include a main supermarket, commercial stores and parking areas. Super Mora is known to be competing with Auto Mercado, which recently opened a 2,600 m² store in Escazu.

Fierce Competition Between Supermarkets

Certain chains are drowning out competition by making huge investments in opening new stores or by buying up other businesses in Costa Rica.

Gessa - owner of Peri, Jumbo, and Supercompro- announced this week its acquisition of Saretto supermarket, located in Escazu. The goal: to break into the premium products segment (gourmet imported), Saretto’s strong point, Guillermo Aguilar, general manager of the corporation, said to Nacion.com.

Seven New Wal-Mart Stores in Guatemala

With a $3.12 million investment, the multinational supermarket chain inaugurated the first of seven new stores planned for the second half of 2010.

Located at Mix Shopping Mall, in the City of San Cristóbal, the new facility has already created 91 jobs.

Marcio Cuevas, Wal-Mart corporate affairs manager, told Elperiodico.com.gt: “we’ll open seven new stores of our various brands (Supertiendas Paiz, Despensa Familiar, Maxi Bodega y ClubCo), in the second half of 2010”.

Automercado, Walmart and Gessa are expected to open 18 new supermarkets in 2010, worth a combined investment of $20 million.

Walmart will add ten new locations to its network, using its Pali and Maxi Bodega Brands, while Automercado will open two and Gessa six under its Perimercados and Super Compro brands.
