The growth is attributed to the investments that are being made in the sector, which together amounted to $400 million in 2012-2016.

The CEO of the National Committee of Sugar Producers (CNPA) of Nicaragua, Mario Amador, said " ... weekly production in sugar mills is 600,000 quintals (27,600 tons) of sugar. "

Amador said that "... a part of the investment is intended to increase the capacity of the boilers and increase the contributions to the power distribution network, which plans to move from its current 74 megawatts output to 150 megawatts by 2017.... work is also being carried out on " ... diversifying production in order to have more sustainability in businesses and lower costs."

" ... The NCPA plans to expand the amount of sugarcane areas under cultivation, with the purpose of increasing exports to the market of the European Union (EU), to where they are currently exporting ethanol. According to the CNPA, the average yield of sugarcane in Nicaragua is about 80 tons per acre (0.7 hectare).
