Strong Increase in Hiring Expectations

After the first quarter of 2020 in Guatemala, 10% of companies reported that they planned to increase their payrolls, for the second quarter this proportion rose to 15%.

Employers in Costa Rica report cautiously optimistic hiring plans for the second quarter of 2020. Fifteen percent of employers are contemplating an increase in their payrolls, 6% anticipate a decrease and 78% will remain unchanged, so the Net Employment Trend is +9%, reported Manpower.

The document states that "... Employers in five of the six regions expect to increase hiring levels during the next quarter. The strongest labor markets are forecast in the San Jose and Puntarenas & Limon regions with Net Employment Trends of +11%. Employers in Alajuela forecast moderate hiring activity, reporting a +10% Trend, while Heredia and Guanacaste Trends are +4% and +3%, respectively. However, employers in Cartago report a reduction in their workforce, presenting a Trend of -1%.

An increase in the labor force of the six sectors is expected for the next quarter. The strongest labor market is expected in the Services sector where the Net Employment Trend is +11%. Manufacturing employers report a favorable Trend of +9%, while a Trend of +7% is reported in the Trade and Communications & Transport sectors. On the other hand, the more cautious hiring plans are reflected in the Construction Trends, with +3%, and Agriculture, Fishing, Mining & Extraction, with +4%.

Participating employers are classified according to the four organizational sizes: Microenterprises have less than 10 employees; Small Enterprises have 10-49 employees; Medium Enterprises have 50-249 employees; and Large Enterprises have 250 or more employees.

Manpower's latest report states that Guatemalan employers report moderate hiring plans for the third quarter of 2019, with 13% of employers expecting to increase their workforces, 5% anticipating a decrease and 82% remaining unchanged, resulting in a Net Employment Trend of +8%.
