Statistics on Agribusiness in Nicaragua

The Plan for Production, Consumption and Trade in the 2017-2018 Cycle includes details of the Nicaraguan government's projections for agricultural, livestock, poultry, aquaculture and forestry sectors for the current year and the next.

From the executive summary of the Plan for Production, Consumption and Trade in the 2017-2018 Cycle by the government of Nicaragua:

- For the 2017/2018 agricultural cycle, projections are to plant an area of 1.7 million manzanas (6.8% growth compared to the target for the 2016/2017 cycle): 1.2 million for basic grains (8.4% growth), 0.5 million for agro export categories (3.3% less) and the rest for vegetables, roots, tubers and musaceae (3.3% growth).

- In the bovine sector, the slaughter of 860 thousand head of cattle is expected, milk production of 280 million gallons and exports of 35 thousand head of cattle. Estimated chicken meat production is 310.3 million pounds and total egg production is projected at 29.0 million cartons. In swine production, the slaughter of 240 thousand heads is expected and 27.7 million pounds of meat obtained.

- In fisheries and aquaculture, total production is estimated at 87.9 million pounds. In the forestry sector the target for the permissible cut volume is 278 thousand cubic meters of wood. Mining is projected to grow by 1.6% in metallic mining and an average of 4.9% in non-metallic mining. In addition, the promotion of non-traditional exports of fruits, vegetables, seeds and live animals from farms will be continued.

The agricultural and livestock guild plans to close the 2017/18 cycle with growth close to 5.5%, which is due to better yields and a rebound in international prices of the main export products.

Companies in the agricultural sector expect better results to be achieved in the next agricultural cycle than in the previous one, which was affected, among other things, by the low international prices of products such as sugar cane, sorghum and peanuts.  For the 2017/2018 cycle, better prices are expected in the international market along with growth in production.
