Sports Footwear: Business in Central America

From January to June 2018, countries in the region imported $25 million in sports footwear, and 50% were bought by companies in Guatemala and Costa Rica.

Slight increase in regional purchases
Between the first half of 2017 and the same period in 2018, the value of imported sports footwear in Central America registered a slight increase of 1%, growing from $24.5 million to $24.7 million.

This increase completes the year-on-year increase reported in the first six months of 2016 and 2017, when increases of 14% and 1%, respectively, were recorded.

Guatemala, main importer
From January to June 2018, the main buyer in the region was Guatemala, with $7.6 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $4.7 million, El Salvador, with $4.1 million, Panama, with $4 million, Honduras, with $3.5 million, and Nicaragua, with $800.000.

Main suppliers
In the first six months of last year, 25% of the value imported into the region was from China, 11% from Vietnam, 7% from the U.S. and 5% from Indonesia.

China is the market origin of imports that has decreased the most in the first half of the last seven years, since in 2012 it represented 51% of total purchases in Central America, and in 2018 that proportion fell to 25%.

Footwear: Purchases Increase from Vietnam and Mexico

Between January and June 2018, the region imported footwear and related parts for $313 million, and purchases to Vietnam and Mexico increased 34% and 3%, respectively.
