Spanish Wines Are Gaining Ground in Central America

In recent years’ Spanish wines have gained importance according to the amount purchased, since in the first half of 2012 they represented 10% of total regional imports and for the same period in 2020 the proportion rose to 23%.

Regional Business Downwards
Between the first semester of 2019 and the same period of 2020 the value of wine imports into Central America registered a 17% decrease, going from $38 million to $32 million.

For the periods in question, imports from Chile and Spain decreased by 19% and 13%, respectively.

Costa Rican Companies, Main Buyers
From January to June 2020 the main importer in the region continued to be Costa Rica, with $14 million, followed by Panama, with $7 million, Guatemala, with $6 million, and El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua with $2 million each.

Nicaragua was the only market in the region that during the first six months of the year registered an increase in its purchases, as it reported a 36% year-on-year variation.

In the case of Costa Rica, imports fell 4%, in Honduras 7%, in Guatemala and El Salvador 20%, in both cases, and in Panama the decline was 40%.

Chile, Main Supplier in the Region
In the first six months of the year, 32% of the value imported from Central America came from Chile, 23% from Spain, 11% from Italy, 10% from Argentina, 9% from the United States and 6% from France.

For the months in question in recent years, Spain is the market of origin of purchases that has grown the most, rising from 10% in 2012 to 23% in 2020.

Alcoholic beverages: Imports increase 25%

During the first three months of the year, the countries of the region reported imports of alcoholic beverages for $88 million, 25% more than what was reported in the same quarter of 2017.
