Spain prepares US$1 billion fund to provide food aid

Spain hopes to lead creation of a US$1.7 billion fund to provide aid for programs that boost farm productivity in developing countries such as those of Central America, said Mario Salaverría, El Salvador's agriculture minister.

The proposal emerged at the meeting in Rome of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Association. Central America is presenting the meeting with a joint program to tackle the growing food crisis in the region.

That is what the Chancellor is saying when proposing the creation of an International Cooperation Agency to execute the tasks that the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry evidently does not carry out itself.


In an interview published on, Manuel González, Minister of Foreign Affairs (MRREE) of Costa Rica, sought to justify his proposed creation of an Agency for International Cooperation, noting that currently the tasks that would be entrusted to the new state run entity are not being carried out, such as the consolidation of information about resources received by the country in terms of international cooperation. The Minister emphasized: "You ask the country today to give you a list, detailed and accurate, of some of the cooperation that is received and given, and we do not know" .

Guatemala: Analysis of Agricultural Soils

From September the country's laboratories are authorized to import reference soil samples in order for them to be analyzed by the agricultural sector.

From a statement issued by Agexport:

On September 12 Government Agreement 177-2016 MAGA was published in the Official Journal, which authorizes national laboratories to import collaborative trial samples for quality control of the analysis of results of agricultural soils. The idea of this, according to entrepreneurs from the Laboratories Sector at AGEXPORT is to allow national soil laboratories to be able to participate in international programs on quality control of the results of soil analysis.

$4.5 Million for Irrigation

August 2009

FAO's initiative intends to enhance irrigation systems in Central America.

The program was approved in the Ministerial Meeting for Commerce and Agribusiness in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Mexico would be included in the initiative, to "increase knowledge and administration capacity", said Alberto Cárdenas, Mexican agriculture secretary.
