Rony Gámez, head of the quality control lab at the Honduran Institute of Coffee (Ihcafé acronym in Spanish), said they are expecting to beat the price per pound they received during 2008.

In an interview with the La Tribuna website, Rony Gámez says, ”Currently, we are the country contributing the most lots for the electronic auctions for the cups of excellence in the region and South America, which indicates a better potential for the coffee.”

Sponsored by the Honduran Coffee Institute (Ihcafe), the auction was held at the end of the seventh round of the Coffee Excellence Cup.

Ihcafe’s technical director, Mario Ordóñez, was reportedly pleased because the auction enabled a record price of $22.05 per pound to be obtained after being sent to 125 international purchasers, says Latribuna.hn.

Coffee Auction Ready to Start in Nicaragua

The electronic auction is set to begin tomorrow for the 26 best lots of coffee at the Cup of Excellence 2009 event.

The vice-president of the Nicaraguan Association of Special Coffees (ACEN, acronym in Spanish), Julio Peralta, said that the base price for this year is $2.50 per pound, or $250 for 100 pounds.

Thirty-three of the grain lots that won the 2009 edition of the Cup of Excellence in El Salvador participated in the auction.

In total $506,221.15 were negotiated during the electronic auction. The winner of the competition, El Topacio farm, reached a price of $22.25 a pound.
