Franchises in Costa Rica Continue to Grow

A third study by the Chamber of Commerce on the field shows an increase of 28% last year.

A statement of the Chamber of Commerce of Costa Rica reads:

Sales generated by the franchise sector in 2011 accounted for 1.6% of GDP.

The franchise sector in Costa Rica has shown strong growth over the years. A study by the Chamber of Commerce in Costa Rica, was able to identify 221 brands operating as franchises in the country, of which 183 are international and 38 are national, which means a growth of 28% compared to 2011.

Identified national franchises in 2011 to 2012, showed a growth of 52% going from 25 to 38 franchises. Referring to the activities in which national franchises are engaged in, the food sector has an indisputable dominion. 50% belong to this activity, including cafes, ice cream parlors, juice sales, restaurants and fast food. Cafes and restaurants are the most preponderant.

With 21%, franchisees are dedicated to specialized service, among which auto repair services, sales and installation of air conditioning, veterinary services, construction and entertainment. Specialized services include food and 71% of total national franchises, which are 26 of the 38 that are on the market.

Entry fees of franchises vary by type of business, eg for the food sector, regardless of the type of franchise that is, the entrance fee ranges from $ 2,000 to $ 200,000, and the initial investment from $ 20,000 to the $ 2.5 million. Note that since the establishment of the first franchise in Costa Rica, it is estimated that national franchises have invested in the country of more than $ 10 million. 68% of the national franchises have a shorter return on investment (ROI, for its acronym in English) of less than 2 years, which is extremely attractive to investors.

Of the investors who allocate their capital to national franchises, 71% could see a return on investment (ROI) in a period of two years.

This was revealed in the latest study by the franchise sector of the Chamber of Commerce of Costa Rica (CCCR). In addition for 19% return on investment (ROI) could come in 2 or 4 years, while for the remaining 10% in 4 or 6 years.

Franchises in Costa Rica Up 14.6%

March 2011

According to a 2010 study by the Chamber of Commerce, 22 new franchises were identified in relation to 2009.

There are 172 franchises currently operating in the country of which 14% are in San Jose. Of the 147 international franchises, 59% are of U.S. origin.

More Costa Rican Franchises

February 2010

Data from the Chamber of Commerce shows that franchises of Costa Rican origin increased 40.9% in the past four years.

According to the same study, out of the 150 franchises operating in the country, 14% are of Costa Rican origin.
