Shortage of Talent in Guatemala

Sales, operations and production are the areas in which Guatemalan entrepreneurs face the most difficulties in recruiting staff with the necessary skills.

Leadership, the ability to make decisions and to identify and solve problems are the skills most required by companies in Guatemala, and the most difficult ones to find when hiring staff.

The "Talent Gaps 2016" study, prepared by Fundesa, said that technicians, engineers and graduates in business administration and other disciplines are the most in demand by companies in Guatemala.

ISO certifications, Microsoft Office, SAP and other standards such as BPM and Lean Six Sigma for industrial production processes are the most needed skills according to the entrepreneurs who were surveyed, but they are also the hardest to find in the country.

Technicians in mechanics, refrigeration, electromechanics and electricity are the most difficult to find and the most needed for businesses, particularly for the industrial sector.

In  regards to academic careers, entrepreneurs surveyed in the study said that the three degrees most needed are business administration, industrial engineering and chemistry.

In the view of employers, universities should focus on training technicians in electrical engineering, general mechanics and electrical mechanics.
