Rice: Purchases Up 34% in 2018

Last year, foreign purchases of rice by companies in Central America totaled $356 million, 34% more than in 2017.

Panama, top buyer
During 2018, the main importer of rice in Central America was Panama, with $79 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $75 million, Honduras, with $69 million, Nicaragua, with $47 million, Guatemala, with $46 million and El Salvador, with $40 million.

Regional business upwards
Between 2017 and 2018, the value of rice imports increased by 34%, from $186 million to $254 million.

As with total purchases, for the years concerned imports from Brazil also reported an increase, in this case was 106%, rising from $37 million to $75 million.

Origin of imports
In 2018, 49% of the value imported from Central America was from the U.S., 20% from Brazil, 8% from Paraguay, 7% from Guyana and 4% from Uruguay.

In the last seven years, Guyana is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most, since in 2012 there were no purchases by companies in the region and in 2018 accounted for 7% of Central American purchases.

In the first six months of the year, rice imports in Central America reached $163 million, an increase of 56% over the same period in 2017.

More Brazilian Rice in Panama

August 2018

Explained by an increase in purchases made from companies in Brazil, during the first quarter of the year Panama imported $19 million worth of rice, 207% more than in the same period in 2017.
