Rice Producers In Panama Request Suspension of Imports

Although a subsidy of $20 million for local production has been approved, calls are being made for the suspension of rice imports, even though the local supply is insufficient to meet demand.

According to industry representatives, the importation of rice has turned into a business which caused extensive damage to the rice industry during the past administration.

"... Rafael Tejedor of the National Millers Association of Panama, said on TVN-News that they are aware that they can not meet the demand for the grain in the country, but grain imports became a business for the last government administration. "

According to Tejedor, reports Laestrella.com.pa, "... imports in this category represents damage to the rice industry. Yesterday at a meeting with Minister of Agricultural Development (MIDA), Jorge Arango, the company agreed to withdraw imported rice which is for sale. "
