Resumption of Convention Center Tender

The Guatemalan government has announced that in two weeks it will publish the tender documents for the feasibility study and master plan to build a Convention District.

Tuesday, July 4, 2017

A year after the government's interest in developing a large convention center in the capital was announced for the first time, the project has been brought back into the limelight.

According to the Ministry of Economy (Mineco), "... before 15 July, the event will be published on the Guatecompras website, and six months later, the results of the consultancy will be available."

Elperiodico.com.gt reports that "...The idea is to use the study which is to be contracted out in order to establish the model that could be used to finance the project, from options which include a concession, public-private alliance or public investment. In addition, the location of the complex, although it has been announced that the area could be the Industry Park, located in Zone 9 and administered by the Standing Committee on Exhibitions (Coperex). According to Allison Batres, project coordinator at the Mineco, the best option is a concession because the state does not have the capacity to finance the project. It would be an investor who builds and operates it, paying land rent and royalties for the operations."
