Restrictions Hit Cattle Farmers in Nicaragua

Restrictions by Honduras, Guatemala and Panama on Nicaraguan beef exports have caused a reduction in revenues of about $60 million for exporters, who are demanding reciprocal measures to those countries.

Thursday, January 26, 2012

Since 2010, Nicaraguan farmers have failed to collect about $60 million in profit due to the restrictions imposed by the authorities of Honduras, Panama and Guatemala on importing meat from Nicaragua, said industry leaders in the El Nuevo Diario.

Panama requires payment of a 30% tax and Honduras and Guatemala cite concerns over phytosanitary measures, said the president of the Nicaraguan Chamber of Meat (Canicarne), Onel Perez.

"So we are demanding that the Government to apply reciprocal measures to those markets (if they are not able to remove the obstacles)," said Perez. The Nicaraguan Chamber of Industries, Cadin, has reiterated the importance to the beef industry of regaining the markets of Guatemala, Honduras and Panama, which have been "arbitrarily" closed since early 2010, adds El Nuevo Diario.

Nicaragua exports beef and other meat products to the United States, Venezuela and the European Union.
