Restaurants: Another Closing in Costa Rica

Tony Roma's decided to close its operations in the country as of January 17, adding to the recent restaurant closures that have been reported in recent months.

According to signs placed at Tony Roma's restaurant in San Rafael de Escazu, the closure is due to a remodeling, however, according to letters given to the former workers, the reason for the dismissal is because of the closure of the business in the country.

Elfinancierocr.com reports that "... the press office of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) confirmed that they received 12 requests for conciliation from former workers who presented themselves with a letter of dismissal explaining that the reason is the closure of the business in the country."

The article adds that "... Tony Roma's is operated in Costa Rica by the company Corporacion Piramide T.R. de Costa Rica S.A., this company opened its restaurant in Escazu, in January 2000."

The closure of Tony Roma's joins the closure of an establishment of the Hooters chain, as well as the end of the operations of the three restaurants that the Applebee's chain had in the country.

Arguing that there were problems of profitability, the Applebee's chain decided to close the three service centers it was operating in the country.

The restaurant franchise was operated in Costa Rica by the company Dine Equity, and the premises that were closed were located in Terrazas de Lindora, San Pedro and Cariari.

The upcoming opening of two restaurants by the international chain Tony Roma's in Managua has been announced, through an agreement with Grupo Carvajal.
