Regional Aluminum Imports Up 8%

Last year the region bought $618 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures from abroad, 8% more than in 2016, and 17% of imports came from the US.

Variation of regional imports
Between 2016 and 2017 the total import value of aluminum and its manufactures in Central America rose by 8%, growing from $572 million to $618 million. For the years in question, purchases made from China also increased, going from $91 million to $104 million, which is equivalent to an increase of 14%.

Imports by country 
In 2017, the main importer of aluminum and its manufactures in the region was Guatemala, with $160 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $135 million, Panama, with $116 million, El Salvador with $89 million, Honduras with $69 million and Nicaragua, with $48 million.

Origin of regional imports 
During the past year, 17% of the value imported by Central America came from the USA, 17% from China, 9% from Mexico, 9% from Belgium and 3% from Spain. 

China is the market of origin of purchases that has grown the most in the last six years, as in 2012 it represented 11% of the total value of regional purchases, and last year that proportion rose to 17%.

During the first two months of 2018, countries in the region imported $7 million worth of aluminum and its manufactures from Mexico, and 49% was purchased by companies in Costa Rica and Guatemala.
