Refrigerators: Market Figures up to June 2018

In the first six months of the year, Central American countries imported $190 million worth of refrigerators and freezers, and 43% was purchased by companies in Guatemala and Honduras.

Imports by country
From January to June 2018, the largest buyer of refrigerators and freezers in Central America was Guatemala, with $44 million, followed by Honduras, with $38 million, Costa Rica, with $36 million, Panama, with $30 million, El Salvador, with $26 million and Nicaragua, with $15 million.

Variation of regional imports
Between the first half of 2017 and the same period in 2018, the value imported into the region decreased 13%, from $219 million to $190 million.

For the periods concerned, purchases from Mexico decreased 10%, from $67 million to $60 million.

Origin of imports 
In the first six months of the year, 32% of the value imported from Central America was from Mexico, 23% from China, 19% from the U.S. and 8% from Colombia.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most in the first half of the last seven years, since in 2012 it represented 7% of the total value purchased, and by 2018 that proportion increased to 23%.

Observation:
The equipment in this analysis includes refrigerators and freezers for domestic and industrial use, cabinets, chiller cases, display cases and furniture for cold production, horizontal and vertical freezers such as ark or cupboard styles and other machines or devices for cold production. Air conditioning equipment is not included in the report's figures.
