Refrigerators: $592 Million in Purchases

By 2021, the sector of imports of refrigerators and freezers in Central America rose by 149%, Guatemala being the main buyer in the region by $106 million, where the main supplier was Mexico which accounted for 33% in sales to the region, equivalent to $194 million.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In 2021, the main importer was Guatemala with $106 million, followed by Costa Rica with $87 million, followed by Honduras with $58 million, El Salvador with $56 million, Panama with $51 million and Nicaragua with $24 million.

For the period in question, Honduran companies recorded higher year-on-year increases in purchases, amounting to 86%, for the other remaining countries, imports represented 76% for Panamanian companies, 71% for Salvadoran companies, 53% for Guatemalan companies, 48% for Nicaraguan companies and 20% for Costa Rican companies.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between 2020 and 2021, the value of imports in the region increased by 149%, from $238 million to $592 million.

Mexico and China, Main Sellers
During 2021, 33% of the value imported from Central America came from Mexico, 28% from China, 11% from Colombia, 10% from the U.S. and 5% from Guatemala.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question in recent years, as in 2012 it accounted for 8.22% of the total value purchased and by 2021 that proportion rose to 27.83%.

The equipment included in this analysis are refrigerators and freezers for domestic and industrial use, cabinets, chests, showcases and furniture for cold production, horizontal and vertical chest or cabinet type freezers and other machines or appliances for the production of cold. Air conditioning equipment is not included in the report's figures.

Toilet Paper: Costa Rica, Main Importer

By 2021, toilet paper imports increased slightly by 6% to reach $280 million, with Costa Rica being the main importer in the Central American region with $69 million, the main supplier to Central America was El Salvador with $170 million.

Autoparts: Guatemala, Main Buyer in the Region

For the third quarter of 2021 a slow recovery of the automotive sector is seen, reaching purchases in the Central American region for $451 million, with China being the main supplier, with 27% of the market.
