Exports of Palm Oil to Mexico Recover

In 2017, the value of palm oil sales from Central America to Mexico grew by 23% compared to 2016, which contrasts with the declines registered in the previous four years.

Variation of regional exports  
Explained by an increase in the price of exports, between 2016 and 2017 the value sold from the region to Mexico grew by 23%, going from $196 million to $241 million. 

On the other hand, the export volume dropped by 8%, decreasing from 404 thousand tons in 2016 to 372 thousand tons in 2017. 

Exports by country 
In 2017, the main exporter of palm oil from Central America to Mexico was Guatemala, with $116 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $103 million, Nicaragua, with $19 million, Honduras with $3 million and Panama with a million dollars. 

Price of exports 
Between January 2012 and April 2016, the average price of a kilo of Central American exports fell by 61%, decreasing from $0.95 to $0.37. 

The downward trend started to reverse in the middle of last year. The average price per kilo exported went up from $0.37 in April 2016, to $0.71 in December 2017.

Between April 2016 and June 2017, the average price of an exported kilogram of palm oil and its fractions from Central America to Mexico grew by 59%, rising from $0.37 to $0.59.

Palm Oil: Main Export to Mexico

July 2017

Of the total exported by the Central American countries to Mexico in 2016, 24% corresponded to palm oil, totalling $187 million, equivalent to 393 thousand tons.

Central America: Palm Oil Exports Up 37%

March 2017

Between January and September 2016 Central American countries exported outside the region 712,000 tons of palm oil, 37% more than in the same period in 2015.
