Record Price of Coffee in Auction

The international auction Cup of Excellence 2009 in Honduras reached a record price of $18.75 per pound.

37 producers from Honduras participated in the auction which was organized by the Honduran Institute of Coffee (Ihcafe). At a record price of $18.75 per pound, the winner of the Cup of Excellence, Bertilio Reyes Portillo sold 3,750 pounds of coffee to the Japanese company Kyokuto Fadie Corporation.

Francisco Oseguera, coordinator of the Cup of Excellence, explained to “the event began at about seven o’clock in the morning and bidders from all over the world attended during the following four and a half hours.”

$16.50 Per Pound of Paid for Specialty Coffee in Honduras

The prices paid in the electronic auction of specialty coffee in Honduras did not reach the levels of previous year.

The highest amount paid went to coffee from the winner farm in the Cup of Excellence contest, Santa Rosita Lempira, which was acquired by companies Time's Club for C-COOP, Kyokuto Fadie, Tashiro Coffee and Tribe, all from Japan as well as Coffee Libre from South Korea.

The yellow-grain “Tatuai” brand was valued at $22.05 for every pound of export quality coffee.

The specialty coffee auction netted $718.838, the highest of any of the nine countries where the Excellence Cup is held.

An average coffee quintal was sold for $723, surpassing the previous record of $536.27, which dates back to 2008.

The 37 lot auction is scheduled for tomorrow, with 700 bags of 150 pounds being offered at an initial price of $2.50 per pound.

Rony Gámez, head of the quality control lab at the Honduran Institute of Coffee (Ihcafé acronym in Spanish), said they are expecting to beat the price per pound they received during 2008.
