El Salvador: electronic auction of coffee carried out

The 36 lots of coffee that won in the Cup of Excellence competition were to be sold today.

More than 100 coffee buyers were preparing to bring home some of the best coffee in El Salvador. The electronic coffee auction, in which the 36 winners of the Cup of Excellence competition take part, began at seven o'clock in the morning in San Salvador, and was expected to last about five hours. Results can be seen on the web site www.cupofexcellence.org.
Ricardo Espitia, executive director of the El Salvador Coffee Board, explained that about 132 companies from around the world requested samples from the winners of the Cup of Excellence competition, which took place on April 25.

The prices paid in the electronic auction of specialty coffee in Honduras did not reach the levels of previous year.

The highest amount paid went to coffee from the winner farm in the Cup of Excellence contest, Santa Rosita Lempira, which was acquired by companies Time's Club for C-COOP, Kyokuto Fadie, Tashiro Coffee and Tribe, all from Japan as well as Coffee Libre from South Korea.

Thirty-three of the grain lots that won the 2009 edition of the Cup of Excellence in El Salvador participated in the auction.

In total $506,221.15 were negotiated during the electronic auction. The winner of the competition, El Topacio farm, reached a price of $22.25 a pound.

A total of 36 lots of coffee were selected to participate in the electronic auction Taza de la Excelencia 2008 (Cup of Excellence 2008), which will be held for the sixth consecutive year.

The lots with the best aromas will go through a selection process that ensures its quality and offers the international market an exceptional product, the Salvadorean Coffee Board said last Saturday.
