Puerto Rico seeks alliance with Panama

Panama's fortunate geographic location has piqued the interest of Puerto Rico, which is interested in local ports.

Fernando Bonilla, Secretary of State and executive director of the Port Authority of Puerto Rico, said the situation is ideal for an alliance between the two entities to develop business for merchandise moving throughout the Caribbean region.
He said such an alliance "would make us both more competitive on a world level."

The Panama Maritime Chamber, in order to promote trade ties, has signed a cooperation agreement with the Port Authority of Melilla in Spain.

The agreement seeks to strengthen trade relations and promote port projects, as well as commercial developments and training.

"Melilla, like Panama, has a strategic geographical position, which allows it to work with all the North-South Atlantic maritime traffic routes and especially on routes between South and West Africa and Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, and with America and Asia", said Steve Albert, president of the Port Authority of Melilla, reported Capital.com.pa.

Panama and Israel Extend Cooperation Agreement

The signed amendment will allow a wider participation of governments in different projects.

That Agreement was signed aiming at defining a set of basic principles on which to establish a framework to facilitate trade between the two countries on various trade policies like promotion of goods and services, logistics and marketing, international trade integration, among others.

The agreement is looking to expand the FTA between the two countries, widening the relationship in the political and cooperation fields.

Billateral commerce rose 1400% since the signing in 1994 of the FTA between both countries. Now, the intention is to strengthen the relationshipt with strategic agreements in environment and coordinated action in multilateral bodies such as the United Nations Security Council.
