Projections for Avocados in Honduras

The plan is to increase the area devoted to avocado plantations in the country to 5 thousand hectares, with the aim of meeting part of local demand, which is currently mainly met with imports.

According to estimates by the authorities, the local market annually demands close to 16 thousand tons of avocado and to achieve the demand some productive projects are being developed.

Regarding the projects that are being carried out, the facilitator of the avocado chain at the Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), José Antonio Romero Santos, explained to Latribuna.hn that " ...Taiwan, is currently developing an avocado project in the Intibucá area. "

The article adds that " ... Meanwhile, representatives from the Government of Taiwan will continue providing support, this time in the Ocotepeque area, where there are around 200 producers and about 170 manzanas of avocado."

Drop in Sugar Production Projected

Due to climate effects, the Honduran union expects that around 40,000 less tons of sugar will be produced in the current season.

On top of the climate situation is also the fact that the price of sugar has been falling, partly explained by the abundant crops reported in places such as India. The result of this is that production costs in countries such as Honduras are reducing competitiveness of the crop.
